Live on Fair Game, 2008

R.I.P. Ari Up.

I met Ari Up once because I booked and produced this radio session for Fair Game a couple years ago. (John Delore was the engineer, which means he did the actual work of recording the music.) Ari was extremely talkative and very on, exactly the type of warm, larger-than-life character you would expect. She was so cool. One thing I really appreciated about her was how she was pretty well aware of her band’s legendary status and talked about it and sang about it, but she wasn’t a pretentious type. She was just proud and grateful and talented. I will maintain until my dying breath that she sang the definitive version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
